SCHOLARSHIP
Policies and Procedures
The Space Coast League of Cities and Waste Management, Inc., annually co-sponsor a $2,000 scholarship for students of public administration in Florida. Each organization contributes $1,000. The name of the scholarship is the Space Coast League of Cities & Waste Management Scholarship. It is renewable, but not transferable. Proceeds are paid directly to the designated college or university of the student.
Eligible Students To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must:
– be a permanent resident, of Brevard County.
– be pursuing a declared major in Public Administration (graduate or undergraduate level) at any of the accredited four-year colleges or universities in Florida which have a Public Administration degree program.
– have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), officially verified by the school.
Eligible Schools Because they offer Bachelors (B), Masters (M) or Doctorate (D) degrees in public administration, the following Florida colleges and universities are eligible to participate in this program:
– Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (Florida A&M), Tallahassee (B)
– Florida Atlantic University Boca Raton (B,M,D)
– Florida International College Miami (B,M,D)
– Florida Memorial College, Miami (B)
– Florida State University, Tallahassee (M,D)
– Nova Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale (M,D)
– St. Leo College, St. Leo (B)
– St. Thomas University, Miami (B)
– University of Central Florida, Orlando (B,M)
– University of Florida, Gainesville (M)
– University of North Florida, Jacksonville (M)
– University of South Florida, Tampa (M)
– University of West Florida, Pensacola (M)
Selection Criteria These consist of the following elements, weighted as shown:
– GPA (5 points)
– Need or reason for wanting scholarship (4 points)
– Career goals (3 points)
– Elected and appointed leadership positions (2 points)
– Work experience (2 points)
– Extracurricular activities (1 point)
– Permanent resident in one of Brevard County's municipalities (1 point).
Each element is rated from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest). The score for each element is then multiplied by the number of points (1 to 5) assigned to that element. The applicant with the highest total points is recommended to the Board of Directors and the membership for approval as the scholarship recipient. The applicant with the next highest total is designated the alternate, to receive the scholarship if the primary recipient no longer qualifies. The committee may recommend that no award be given if none of the applicants are sufficiently qualified.
