FIRE DEPARTMENT NEWS

FIRE DEPARTMENT NEWS

Did you know that all thunderstorms produce lightning and are dangerous? If you can hear thunder, you are in danger! Many lightning deaths occur ahead of storms or after storms have seemingly passed.  Lightning may strike as far away as 10 miles from rainfall.  When planning outdoor activities this time of year it is important to monitor the weather and be prepared to immediately move to a safe place such as a fully enclosed building or a hard-topped metal vehicle with all the windows closed. When indoors during a thunderstorm, stay safe - don’t use a corded phone (cordless and cell phones are o.k.), stay away from electrical equipment and wiring and don’t shower or bathe as water pipes conduct electricity.  In the event someone is struck by lightning - act fast! Call 9-1-1 and immediately begin CPR if the person is unresponsive or not breathing. Use an Automatic External Defibrillator if one is available. Lightning victims do not carry an electrical charge, are safe to touch, and need urgent medical care. Cardiac arrest is the immediate cause of death for those who die. Be safe…when you hear thunder retreat indoors!
